Joint UAS-UGV Interoperability Course (JUIC)

The capstone robotics program: synchronise airborne and ground assets into one common operating picture across mine sites, forward bases and infrastructure corridors.

This capstone course integrates Obsidian’s core robotics platforms to achieve total domain awareness.

Trainees learn to synchronise airborne and ground assets to dominate complex environments such as mining sites, forward operating bases and critical infrastructure corridors.

Core modules

Command and control (C2) architecture

Establishing the common operating picture and mastering the integrated control station interface.

Cross-domain sensor fusion

Using UAV electro-optical and infrared sensors to cue UGV cameras, and correlating the two data streams for accurate threat identification.

Tactical scenarios

  • Perimeter breach response — UAV detects the breach; UGV is dispatched for identification; the quick reaction force is guided in on the UAV feed.
  • Route clearance — UGV leads the convoy while the UAV provides top cover and maps alternate routes.
  • Resource security — UAV runs routine grid searches; UGV performs physical inspection of flagged anomalies.

Logistics and sustainment

Using UGVs as mobile charging docks for UAVs, and field-expedient recovery of downed assets.

Communication relay

Deploying UGVs as static nodes to hold UAV connectivity in urban canyons and rugged terrain.

Capstone exercise

A 48-hour continuous operation simulation involving a coordinated attack on a mock resource site, requiring seamless transition between UAS surveillance, UGV intervention and manned response.
